How Discriminative Advertising Stereotypes Us All
Ever since the invention of the television remote control, people have been trying to avoid television commercials. Not having to get up off the couch to turn the channel meant that we could find something else to watch during commercial breaks, or we could mute the sound. Either way, most people try to avoid those pesky ads.
Now there's the internet, which means more advertising. Unless a person blocks images while surfing the internet, there really isn't any way to keep from seeing the banners and links and pop-ups and all the other advertising annoyances. They're here to stay, so we may as well get used to it.
I'm one person who doesn't try to hide from commercials and ads, because I know I can't beat them. Unfortunately, I have been noticing more and more lately how advertising is discriminative and stereotypical, and I have to wonder how many others have noticed this as well. You might want to keep your finger off of the mute button the next time a commercial comes on during your favorite show so you can see this debacle for yourself.
Take Jif peanut butter, for instance. Remember how their slogan used to be, "Choosy Moms choose Jif"? That's all a person ever heard during a Jif commercial. Then, almost out of nowhere, they started airing commercials with a dad and his child with the slogan "Choosy Dads choose Jif". It's like someone finally complained about men being discriminated against and it was enough to get the powers-that-be to change.
Another example, though not so much about advertising, is Disney Corporation's new family-related website at disneyfamily.com. I was one of the first people to join this site because I felt it would contain useful information for running a better household. I concede that it does precisely what I expected it to do, but it really bothered me that everything was geared up toward mothers - solutions for the "busy mom", quick recipes for "busy moms", parenting advice by "moms" and for "moms".
Why are companies blind to the fact that there are men - fathers - who are an integral part of a family unit? Men that take responsibility for their children and their households, just as mothers do. What about single dads who are raising one or more children on their own, without the help of a wife or significant other? Surely these companies can't think that all fathers are deadbeat dads who don't need useful information about raising a family, can they?
Commercials that seem to be really bad in the way of discriminating against men are ones that are aired on children's networks like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and on networks like Lifetime, Food Network, and HGTV.
Don't get me wrong, I understand about niche marketing and playing to a target demographic. Companies assume that the majority of adults watching programming on these networks are female - and this is probably true. On the other hand, the odds are also pretty good that the women watching these networks are also married to or dating someone. Is it outside of the realm of possibility that her significant other would sit down and watch some tv with her, thus viewing these same commercials?
Now that I've described how advertising can be very discriminatory, I'll tell you how it stereotypes people.
When I see an ad that talks about mothers being bogged down with taking care of their family and then presents a product that is the solution to this problem, I feel that is extremely stereotypical. Women nowadays are not generally stuck at home to cook and clean while their husband works all day. More women today juggle work and home life, and there is no product to change that.
And what about commercials for home security products like ADT? In these commercials, there is always a mother with her children, calling in to report that someone is trying to break into her home. She is generally scared half to death with her children huddled around her. What the commercial implies is that women and children have no other means to defend themselves against predators. They have no man in the house to take care of them, so they need to purchase a home security system.
I could go on here to describe how these scenarios go about alienating other demographics, such as homosexuals, but I think you get the point. We are all being stereotyped and discriminated against, and we can't get enough of it.

how much is adt pay for marine reservists?
I am a Lcpl in the Marine Corps Reserve and was asked to do some active duty time (I think that is what it is called) but I dont want to get paid really little for a hard days work because the drive is 45 minutes away so I would have to pay for gas, I would also need to get a haircut every week and other expenses so I am trying to weigh my options, but I do not know how much I would get paid. Does anybody know?
